The best way to think about link building is assuming that each backlink created, is like a vote from an outside websites voting you’re website the best for your particular keyword.  The more backlinks or votes, the higher you rank in the search engines.  Now lets say a particular website (person) with a lot of trust (pagerank) and authority backlinks to your website for a certain keywords… then this gives you an even bigger boost for the keyword. Get enough websites linking to your website the better your search engine placement is.
